Will Power has won just about everything there is to win in the NTT IndyCar Series such as themost pole positions in Indy car racing history (70), the Indianapolis 500, the series championship(twice) and multiple races along the way. However, his last race win came in June of 2022 at theDetroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle until this year’s race in June at Road America. We had a chanceto chat with Power in the media bullpen for the 2024 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach in April,where in this wide-ranging chat, he talks about his wife’s life-threatening illness, his off-seasonprep, favorite and most challenging parts of the Long Beach circuit (where he’s won twicebefore), karting and Indianapolis hybrid testing. Will Power waves to the fans just prior to the start of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach where he just missed pole position by a scant 0.0040 seconds.
Will Power sits low in the cockpit of his Verizon Chevy Indy car, but also sits high on the all-time pole winner’s list.
Power comes super close to the wall in the exceedingly tight Turn 11 hairpin at Long Beach. He certainly knows the proper line around the corner as he’s scored multiple poles and wins here.
Inch perfect is how to be consistently fast around the tight confines of the fountain area of the seaside circuit. Power’s an expert at that.
There would be a lot more greenery surrounding Power a couple of months after Long Beach when he would win on the rolling hills of ‘America’s National Park of Speed’ – Road America.
Power showed his rear wing to the competition for 15 laps in the lead at Long Beach. He would ultimately wind up finishing sixth in a fuel-save strategy.
